The Creative Process: A Documentary About Art

If you ask me what I came to do in this world, I, an artist, will answer you: I am here to live out loud.

- Émile Zola

Art is all around us.

We see it in galleries and museums, in bookshops and at the cinema, at home, at work – anywhere and everywhere. But what drives someone to create? What are the stories behind the artwork?

The Creative Process interviews fourteen Merseyside artists – painters and photographers, sketchers and sculptors, each with their own compelling stories – and investigates the highly subjective nature of their creativity.

We ask them to explore their artistic journeys – uncovering the varying and extremely personal idiosyncrasies of each individual. We will see how emotionally charged the creation of art is – that the methods and styles of each artist are linked with deeply important people in their lives, powerful moments in their memories, or an overwhelming sense of art and creation being a home for them.

The Creative Process was made in association with the Rathbone Studio, and previewed in July 2015 at BFI Southbank. It screened across Merseyside in 2016.

According to the British Council, it's one of Liverpool's best pieces of arts & culture.
